Like most Pre-Victorian seaside resorts the economy would have been based very much around fishing and in fact it was the Victorians who kick started the 'new craze' of taking a holiday at the local beach. Indeed it became very fashionable to do so and the Victorians also first named the area 'The English Riviera' out of fondness towards this little slice of the continent along the UK coastline, to this day their legacy remains (If nothing else, the name alone entices one)
Torquay is not the only area to fall within the beauty that is 'The English Riviera' nearby Brixham and Paignton also share the name. Torquay has lots on offer: The iconic palm trees, exciting attractions and excellent nightlife. It is however all but impossible to mention Torquay and not talk about the award-winning beaches, with over 22 miles of stunning (Med like) coastline, coves, cliffs and beaches. The majority of the beaches hold top awards for quality and cleanliness, whilst the 'varied walks' run parallel and offer a perfect vantage point to drink in those spectacular views. Water sports play a huge part in the Torquay experience, hardly a suprise given the amount of superb beaches on offer. While there you can try your luck with surfing, water skiing and scuba diving!
Torquay of course has a natural pull on the heart strings due to it's beaches, however there is much more to this place than just sea sand & sun. There are many things to keep the whole family entertained, take a peek at 'Torquay’s Living Coasts' coastal zoo and look out for Fur Seal Cove, Penguin Beach, Octopus Odyssey or the Waves Leisure Pool, offering something different should the weather take a turn for the worse. Modern history more your thing? then why not follow in the footsteps of famous author Agatha Christie and take a walk through her old stomping ground (town) which is slap bang in the middle of 'The English Riviera'. For a great base to explore Devon, Torquay is absolutely ideal!
